The UAB Hunger and Food Security Initiative (HAFSI) is part of an international initiative, Universities Fighting World Hunger, started in 2004 as a partnership between the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and Auburn University. This initiative represents a campus best practice in international programming and sustainable human development. It creates a learning environment where intellectual discovery and social responsibility converge in pursuit of a sustainable world – a world that protects our natural environment and enhances human health and well-being for present and future generations.
UAB joined this coalition in early 2010 after the Sparkman Center for Global Health sponsored 10 students from across UAB's campus to attend the 5th Annual Hunger Summit held at Auburn University. At the summit, the students were inspired by the movement to end hunger and upon returning decided to start organizing a chapter at UAB.
Further partnerships were developed with the UAB Office of Service Learning to broaden the initiative across campus to include faculty, staff, and members of the Birmingham community. You find out more about upcoming events this fall here.
