The Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia: Internationally acknowledged as a leader in HIV/AIDS treatment and research, maternal-child health care and studies, and cervical cancer, malaria and tuberculosis practice, CIDRZ has remained rooted in local community health care while becoming a world-renown resource for infectious disease understanding and breakthroughs.
The Peace Corps Master’s International Program at UAB School of Public Health: The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Public Health offers a Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) degree in cooperation with the Peace Corps Master’s International Program. UAB establishes and monitors academic requirements, and the Peace Corps places MI students overseas as Volunteers.
The Peace Corps Fellows Program at UAB School of Nursing: This program is available to returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) who pursue graduate studies in a variety of subject areas. More than 40 universities currently participate in this program, offering financial assistance to RPCVs, and opportunities for them to use the knowledge and skills they developed during their overseas service during their graduate work as they participate in service learning projects with underserved communities.
The Southern Institute for Appropriate Technology: The Southern Institute for Appropriate Technology is a 176-acre facility located in rural Lineville, Alabama, whose mission is to raise awareness of global issues and provide opportunities for those interested in global health to learn hands-on skills in the development and use of appropriate technologies around the world.
The UAB English Language and Cultural Institute: The ELCI offers a range of English as a Second Language (ESL) courses to students, area residents, business people, local corporations, and international visitors. As the city's professional language learning resource for adults and higher education, the ELCI is committed to "Bridging Cultures through Language" through playing an active role in our region's emerging international identity. Each year, the ELCI provides a scientific writing seminar for our professionals enrolled in the Summer Institute course (EPI 650).
The UAB Center for AIDS Research: The University of Alabama at Birmingham Center for AIDS Research (CFAR), situated in the Medical Center complex of the University, is one of the seven original Centers, established in 1988 by the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases to stimulate research and scientific advancement concerning AIDS and HIV.
The UAB Laboratory for Global Health Observation: The LGHO is a partnership between the schools of Social & Behavioral Sciences and Public Health. The lab was initially developed in summer 2006 by Sarah Parcak, Ph.D., and Tennant McWilliams, Ph.D. The potential for a remote sensing lab, in particular the medical and health research possibilities, evolved into a partnership with Max Michael, M.D., dean of the School of Public Health. The LGHO is an official research center with a primary focus on medical and health-based applications for satellite remote sensing. Two courses are offered within the SOPH/Environmental Sciences department to learn the basic principles and applications of this exciting technology. The UAB Office of International Sponsored Programs: In 2006, UAB created the Office of Sponsored International Programs, to provide faculty and students with assistance and guidance in conducting research in international settings.
The UAB School of Nursing International Programs: Strategies to promote student awareness of global and international health issues include study-abroad programs, short-term immersion experiences in international settings, and incorporation of global health perspectives and content throughout the nursing curriculum. Teaching and scholarship programs of faculty are strengthened by partnerships with international colleagues, and such partnerships also bring opportunities for faculty service to address global health needs.
UAB Study Away Programs: UAB's Study Abroad program has over 50 programs in 27 international locations in the areas of Language, Arts, Public Health, Nursing, Business, Social science, Engineering and Natural Science.
The William C. Gorgas Courses in Clinical Tropical Medicine: From 1996-2007, 336 participants from 50 countries have graduated from the Gorgas Diploma Course. Faculty are drawn from the Universidad Peruana Cayatano Heredai, UAB, & The U.S. Naval Medical Research Center Detachment in Peru. Guest faculty rotate each year from the U.S., Canada, & Africa. Course participants may be eligible for course credit hours within the SOPH/Department of Epidemiology.
The WHO Collaborating Center for International Nursing at UAB: The School of Nursing at UAB was initially designated as a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Center for International Nursing in 1993. It is one of 10 WHO Collaborating Centers in Nursing in the United States and one of 45 in the world. The WHO designation recognizes the School of Nursing's sustained involvement and interest in global nursing development.
